Self Help Africa’s Change-Makers Ball Raises $310K

ChampionScott Partners is delighted to have contributed to the tremendous success of Self Help Africa’s Change-Maker’s Ball held in Boston in early May 2014. Self Help Africa is an international charity that promotes and implements long-term rural development projects in Africa. The organization works with communities in nine African countries – supporting farming families – to grow more and earn more from their produce.

“It is a great pleasure to have been a sponsor of such an amazing event. The generosity of SHA supporters and results of the night speak for itself,” said Geoff Champion, CEO, ChampionScott Partners.

Self Help Africa’s Change-Maker’s Ball raised over $310K, a 70% increase on funds raised the previous year. More than 300 people from across Greater Boston gathered for the gala in Boston’s Seaport Hotel to support entrepreneurship across the continent. This year’s Change-Maker’s Ball attracted a host of celebrities and local dignitaries including NECN’s Jackie Bruno, Senator Mo Cowan (Ret.), and Irish Consul General Breandán O’Caollai.

The 3rd annual black-tie event attracted patrons from the worlds of technology, business, finance and law to support crucial projects.

At the ball, a special project was presented to guests, with a target of raising $85,000. This year’s special project sought to support 90 savings and credit groups in Zambia to benefit small businesses and, through enterprise development, lift 4,500 families out of poverty. For the first time ever, this target was met on the night of the gala!  “What a success! The funds raised will have a significant impact on strengthening the economy and supporting farm communities in rural Africa. It’s an honor to be part of such an altruistic organization,” said Stephanie McGuire, Principal at ChampionScott Partners and Member of Self Help Africa’s Junior Advisory Board.

About Self Help Africa

For almost thirty years Self Help Africa has worked with rural communities to help them improve their farms and their livelihoods. Our mission is to empower rural Africa to achieve economic independence — and on a continent where up to 75% of people rely on small-scale agriculture for their survival, we believe that it is only by tackling the challenges faced by rural farming communities that real and sustained economic progress can be made across sub-Saharan Africa.  Self Help Africa seeks to strengthen agricultural systems, improve access to services and inputs, and provide rural African communities with the opportunities to market and sell their produce.
