Jon J. Judge Appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Paychex®, Inc.
October 2004 - Paychex, Inc. and its executive search and advisory consultants, ChampionScott Partners, have announced that Mr. Jon J. Judge will assume the position of president and chief executive officer for Paychex, Inc. He will be succeeding the founder, Tom Golisano, who will retain his position as chairman of the board. Mr. Judge's objective will be to maintain Paychex's industry leading record of performance, while leading the company to its next phase of growth and development. Mr. Judge most recently was the president and chief executive officer of Crystal Decisions, Inc. Through his leadership, the company experienced significant increases in revenues and profitability leading to a highly successful merger with Business Objects in late 2003. Prior to Crystal Decisions, Mr. Judge had been with IBM in a number of key executive roles. In his last assignment, he was general manager of the Personal Computing Division (PCD) of IBM, leading over 11,000 employees in 160 countries, and managing all aspects of this 10 billion dollar unit.
Paychex, based in Rochester, NY, is the leading national provider of payroll, human resource, and benefits outsourcing solutions for businesses. Paychex's core client is the small to medium-sized company, while its Major Market Services division also meets the special needs of larger businesses. In fiscal 2004, Paychex revenues were nearly $1.3 billion. Tom Golisano founded the company in 1971 with just $3,000 and one employee and has led it to its position of industry leadership today. In January 2004, Paychex was named one of the "Best Managed Companies in America" by Forbes magazine. Also, Forbes magazine named Paychex's CEO, Tom Golisano, one of the 10 best performing CEO's in the U.S., for a second straight year. This annual ranking rates chief executives who provide the best balance between return to shareholders and their compensation.
"Finding a successor to Tom, a dynamic and charismatic founder of an extremely successful company like Paychex, was a complex and delicate matter," says Geoffrey Champion, the founder of ChampionScott Partners. "After all, we were planning to change one of the key ingredients in Paychex's and Tom's recipe for success-Tom. Effecting a leadership change of this magnitude and creating this marriage, required two important advisory skills: managing expectations and understanding the company's culture and strategic objectives. We worked very closely with Tom and the board of directors to ensure that we identified a professional of the stature and business acumen necessary to successfully assume the leadership role from Tom and take responsibility for one of the most successful companies in business today. Equally, we worked in depth with Jon to formulate the objectives for his next leadership role. The match of Paychex's requirements and Jon's character traits ensured that Tom and the board were highly confident in the alignment between the role, strategic plan for the business, and Jon's integration with Paychex's highly successful, established company culture. Our knowledge of the requirements for matching Paychex's objectives and their heritage with Jon Judge's skills, knowledge and experience positioned both parties to focus on the foundation for continued, profitable growth as the primary ground rule for success. This eliminated the potential for having to focus on managing internal change which is often the downfall for executing a successful leadership transition process. ChampionScott's unique ability to effect a complex leadership change of this magnitude is an integral element in the foundation for our client's success and our primary objective as a global boutique executive search and leadership advisory firm."
